Some Notorious Characters
Arguably, about 25% of Americans actively supported the revolution, and an equal number preferred to remain with the British Empire. Most Americans believe that they need greater independence in their affairs.
British plans to “Americanize” the war failed repeatedly, however, including in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina from 1775 to 1776, upstate New York and Vermont in 1777, and the Middle Colonies from 1777 to 1778. Despite these setbacks, Lord George Germain, secretary for the colonies, tried this strategy again in Georgia in 1778 and South Carolina in 1780, campaigns that ended in a disaster for the British.
