About this Event

Drawing Animals Using Oil Pastels

Come learn how to create your own animal masterpiece! This workshop will be broken into three activities: 1. Let's begin with the eyeball and move on to the facial features (eyes, nose & mouth) 2. Start blending! (pick your colours and blend with your fingers) 3. Layering on top, adding texture and density with your strokes until it’s complete.

With the artists help and short demos, participants will be creating each piece free hand. Attendees will be learning how to create in a way that isn't focused on perfection and preciseness but seeing their individual styles come out by their colour choices, where they decide to place the facial features and through their blending and layering.

About the Artist

With a sharp eye for colour and a quirky sense of humour, East Vancouver-based artist Kat McPhee’s vibrant, expressionist portraits have quickly earned a loyal following. Applying elements of graffiti, pop art and animation as inspiration, Kat uses a broad palette that includes oil pastels, acrylics and spray paint to add density and texture to her pieces.
Kat has been drawing since she was old enough to pick up a pencil. Over the years, growing interest in her pieces has allowed her to take her passion to the next level. She creates privately commissioned work almost daily at Vancouver’s Arts Factory Society. Her most recent collections, which you can find showcased around Vancouver, include a series of pop surrealist animal portraits, portraits of pop culture icons and skatedeck art. All of her works boast unique elements inspired by street art and surrealism to create truly one-of-a-kind pieces.
