Join us for a powerful documentary film and conversation with Dr. Anthony Etim Dixon as he explores Black Seminole freedom struggles.
About this Event

In this adult session, historian and filmmaker Dr. Anthony Etim Dixon presents a documentary that traces the lives and legacies of Black Seminoles, maroon communities, and other Africans in Florida who resisted enslavement and fought for freedom. Through archival images, historical analysis, and lived narratives, the film brings forward stories that challenge traditional accounts of Florida and U.S. history, illuminating the deep roots of Black resistance and survival in the region.

Following the screening, Dr. Dixon will engage the audience in a conversation about how these histories shape contemporary conversations about race, identity, and belonging. Attendees will be invited to reflect on what it means to remember and honor communities whose struggles are often erased or marginalized in mainstream narratives.

Anthony Etim Dixon, PhD, is a historian of the African Diaspora and Founder and President of Archival and Historical Research Associates. A native of Fort Valley, Georgia, he earned a BS in History with a minor in African American Studies and a Master’s of Applied Social Science from Florida A&M University, and a PhD in History from Indiana University, where he specialized in the African Diaspora with fields in African American and African history and a minor in Library Science/Special Collections and Archives. He later completed a Master’s of Information Science at Florida State University and has devoted his career to documenting Black experiences, preserving community archives, and making Africana history accessible to the public.

This free, in-person event is part of the 2026 Africana Arts & Humanities Festival and is intended for adult audiences.
