This tour has hidden neon gems that still light up the night, reminding us when San Francisco's nightlife was ablaze with beautiful neon.
About this Event

The Downtown tour route includes several neighborhoods starting on Front Street, SOMA, and the perimeter of Union Square.

Spend an evening under the neon glow with San Francisco Neon authors and photographers Al Barna and Randall Ann Homan. Tours feature local history with architectural and graphic design insights to San Francisco's unique legacy of surviving neon signs. Photography and a lively Q&A are encouraged. Be prepared to walk for 1.5 hours, with rest stops. Tour starts at twilight.

We'll email you all the details for your tour, including public transit and parking tips.

The mission of San Francisco Neon is to educate and advocate for the artistic legacy of historic neon signs: an enduring archive of design, craft, community, and city history. San Francisco Neon advocates for preserving historic neon signs with tours, talks, books, exhibits, consultations, sign design, and events. Our fiscal sponsor is the Tenderloin Museum in San Francisco.

Al Barna and Randall Ann Homan are a husband-and-wife team who authored San Francisco Neon: Survivors and Lost Icons, Neon Icons catalog, and Saving Neon: A Best Practices Guide. They are the founders and hosts of Neon Speaks, an annual international festival and symposium celebrating the past and future of neon. Books available at sfneon.org and neonspeaks.org
