About this Event

P LEASE NOTE THAT THE DURATION OF THIS EVENT SHOWN ABOVE IS ONLY APPROXIMATE AND CANNOT BE GUARANTEED; IT WILL DEPEND ON FACTORS SUCH AS THE WEATHER AND THE WALKING PACE OF THE GROUP.

Since this is a Public Transport walk there is no charge, unlike our Sunday coach walks where we make a charge to cover the coach costs.

Our Sunday rambles usually have three levels of walk, strenuous (A), moderate (B) or leisurely (C), led by Birmingham Ramblers group leaders. Join us and enjoy a great day of social walking with our friendly members.

Please note: Our walks are often on rough tracks and rights of way through fields, woodland and hills. Walkers should preferably wear walking boots and other clothing suitable for the weather. Unless otherwise described, please bring a packed lunch and refreshments for the day.

This Sunday walk has 3 levels of walk:

  • A Walk: 11 miles, little obvious climbing (only 440 ft total ascent).
  • B Walk: Total Distance 9.5 miles, flat. Expect mud in places.
  • C Walk: Total Distance 8 miles, largely flat. Expect mud in places.

Walk leaders:

  • A Walk: Peter Searle
  • B Walk: Celia Howell-Jones.
  • C Walk: Eva Hyde

Walk details:

  • A Walk: This circular walk starts through Dorridge Park then follows a board walk through woodland. Once out of the park our route continues generally south on field paths and through further strips of woodland, with a few short sections of road, skirting the edge of Hockley Heath then crossing the Stratford Upon Avon Canal by Drawbridge Farm. We continue through more fields to St Mary the Virgin church at Lapworth. This grade 1 listed building began life in 12th century, with a separate tower added in 14th Century. The churchyard is noted for its snowdrops early in the year. Leaving the church via field paths and a cricket ground we join the Stratford canal and walk on the tow path beside a flight of locks to our lunch stop by the canal basin at Kingswood. We will then follow a byway south for about 1 km before turning left to rejoin the Stratford canal, which we follow back to the canal basin. From here we have about a mile of road walking, before turning west along an avenue track to Packwood House, a National Trust property. After some further lane walking we divert to pass the historic church of St Giles by Packwood Hall, then follow a lane back to Dorridge Park and the station. Depending on time, refreshment options at the Boot Inn at Kingswood, the National Trust Café at Packwood House or the Railway Inn at Dorridge.
  • B Walk: This circular walk sets off to Dorridge Park then enters a board walk through winter woodland. Once out of the woodland our route continues South mostly on field paths and some sections of road to the Stratford canal. After crossing the canal at a drawbridge we amble through more fields to St Mary the Virgin church at Lapworth. This grade 1 listed building began life in 12th century, with a separate tower added in 14th Century. I’m hoping there will be a fine display of snowdrops to admire during our coffee break. Leaving the church via field paths, a cricket ground and maybe, peacefully grazing cattle, we join the Stratford canal and walk on the tow path beside a flight of locks to our lunch stop at The Boot Inn. After lunch we explore the canal basin before heading back north along a lane and then take a track to Packwood House, A National trust property. After some further lane walking we divert to Packwood Hall and then follow a lane back to Dorridge park and the station.
  • C Walk: Dorridge, Lapworth and Packwood. This circular walk sets off to Dorridge Park then enters a board walk through woodland. Once out of the woodland, our route continues south mostly on field paths and some sections of road. We cross the Stratford canal by Drawbridge farm and continue through more fields to the church of St Mary the Virgin at Lapworth, where there may be a display of snowdrops. Leaving the church via field paths, we join the Stratford canal and walk on the tow path beside some locks. We then head back north along a road past Packwood House, a National Trust property, and then to St Giles church, and Packwood Hall. We finish by following a lane back towards Dorridge park and the station, with, if time permits, a possible detour to a pub.
