St John’s is excited to screen the new documentary series ‘Free Nelson Mandela’.
About this Event

Free Nelson Mandela (directed by James Rogan) is the story of the biggest campaign for a single prisoner in history, and the man who became, for many, the greatest politician of the twentieth century. The series documents Mandela’s journey from activist to revolutionary, from prisoner to negotiator and how he led South Africa to democracy from a Pr*son cell.

The image of Mandela walking free from Pr*son after 27 years is one of the most iconic in history. It took a fierce political struggle and cultural battle to bring about his freedom, producing a global people-powered movement and an explosion of musical activism. With extensive access to those who fought for his freedom and the people at the heart of the anti-apartheid movement, including some of the world’s biggest music stars and hours of previously unseen material, this three-part series, for the first time, tells the story in full.

At this event, we will be screening the first episode of the series (47 minutes), followed by an hour’s panel discussion and Q&A. The panel will be chaired by Reverend Dr Liz Carmichael, Emeritus Fellow at St John's College. Speakers include Chitra Karve, Chair of Trustees of Action for Southern Africa (ACSTA), James Rogan, Creative Director of Rogan Productions and Athol Williams, a South African academic and author based at the University of Oxford.

This event is made possible by kind support from Rogan Productions and Action for Southern Africa (ACSTA). ACTSA is the successor organisation to the Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) which now works alongside Southern African civil society and activists, advancing human rights, and aiming to replace the legacies of colonialism, racism and apartheid with justice and peace.
