Under the full moon, people are being murdered and hideously mangled in New York City. And so a wisecracking (honestly, it’s nearly a comedy) reporter is dispatched from the Daily World to investigate the crimes. He contacts a Doctor Xavier to solicit his expert medical advice, but … you know the title of the picture, so you probably know where this is going.
Doctor X is one of the last films made using the two-color Technicolor process, which was Technicolor’s second try at making color movies. It didn’t create the vibrant, almost painterly colors of later three-strip Technicolor, but when deployed with prowess and under exacting circumstances (it was incredibly difficult to stay in focus, produce workable negatives, etc.), it could be stunning. Color sequences in films like the 1923 The Ten Commandments and Douglas Fairbanks’ The Black Pirate used two-color Technicolor. But by the time of Doctor X, it was nearing its replacement.
