About this Event
Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) are of great interest for application across defence, aerospace and other sectors where materials must survive extremes of temperature, oxidative and erosive environments. Whilst the processing of CMC materials has been relatively widely explored, less so is their characterisation and modelling/simulation. This workshop will gather a range of experts from both academia and industry to discuss relevant aspects of characterisation and modelling of CMC materials. The topics of interest include (i) the characterisation of CMCs, their microstructure, thermal and mechanical properties as well as oxidation and corrosion behaviours; (ii) novel and robust simulation tools/methods that could enable the modelling of processing, materials manufacturing, materials damage development and degradation of CMCs in service conditions. A panel discussion at the end of the workshop will focus on the current status of CMCs in the UK, what can be transferred from polymer matrix composites / metal matrix composites and other related fields, and how experimental characterisation can better support modelling. This workshop is funded by the Defence Materials Centre of Excellence (DMEx) and organised by the University of Oxford. Speakers list will be updated in due course.
