From the streets of San Juan, Puerto Rico, to stages around the world, DJ Negro — born FĂ©lix RodrĂguez — is one of the true architects of reggaetĂłn. Long before the genre dominated global airwaves, Negro was pioneering its sound in the early 1990s with his groundbreaking club night The Noise, where he blended reggae, hip-hop and Spanish rap into an electrifying new urban movement that would evolve into what we now know as reggaetĂłn. He first made his mark as the DJ for rap en español legend Vico C, appearing on seminal releases like MisiĂłn: La Cima and helping launch Spanish-language rap on the island. But it was with The Noise — a collective and compilation series that featured future superstars — that Negro truly shaped the genre. Artists such as Ivy Queen, Baby Rasta & Gringo, Baby Ranks, Las Guanabanas, and many others earned their stripes in his arena, and his Noise compilations became blueprints for reggaetĂłn’s development.
Negro’s influence didn’t stop at production — he oversaw and contributed to debut albums for artists who would become icons of the culture. His work alongside producers and collaborators like DJ Nelson, DJ Eric, and El Chombo helped cement reggaetón’s reach beyond Puerto Rico.
