About this Event
Want to mend? Please bring your own item in need of repairing to work on at the event, or just bring yourself and learn how to weave on cardboard!
What to expect
Join Heart Comonos for our Circular Economy Initiative workshops on Mending, Weaving, and Appliance Repair! These workshops are part of the Heart Comonos mission to promote environmental wellness through sustainable practices and skill development.
Our goal for these workshops is to extend the usability of household items like clothing/textiles to minimize waste sent to landfills, and to reduce our dependence on fast-fashion retailers. With help from our expert “fixers,” we will do our best to repair items, and to teach community members the skills required to do it for themselves with take-home mending kits for repairing clothing and textiles!
This is the second part of our "Cooksvile Brings It Back Around!" series.
In this workshop, Arwen will teach you how to weave on a cardboard loom to create your own pattern. These projects can turn into a tapestry, coaster or a patch for your clothing. She'll also share how to repair holes in clothing with embroidery thread. If you have something you want to mend, please bring it with you!
Mending is much more than just repairing a hole in your shirt. It's a meditative practice that connects us to the things around us, repairing fabrics and extending their stories.
All materials are provided — just bring yourself, a willingness to learn, and an open heart. Beginner friendly, no experience needed!
Meet the Facilitator, Arwen
Arwen Muir Karaszewski is an artist and illustrator based in Ontario who has always been in love with nature, teaching and learning. Currently, she is studying Illustration at OCAD University where she runs a community meditation/art making group "Project Hope".
Arwen also practices sewing and mending, passionately teaching these skills with communities to extend the life-cycle of textiles, encourage creative expression, and build connection. We are all interconnected in this woven tapestry of life and we must work together with responsibility and listen to the heartbeat of the world, for us and the next generations. With a background in activism and arts, Arwen is excited to learn with others through the spirit of "Lartivism".
