Join teaching artist Jan Wutkowski to discover the traditional Korean technique of Joomchi, a fascinating process that transforms layers of Hanji (mulberry paper) into a beautifully textured, fabric-like material. Using only water and the movement of your hands — rubbing, squeezing, and agitating — you’ll “felt” multiple layers of paper together. As the fibers tangle and bond, they form a single, strong, lightweight sheet that can be shaped, stitched, and sculpted.Joomchi is surprisingly durable and versatile. In this class, you’ll create at least one finished piece of your choice, such as:
• Earrings or a necklace
• A small vessel or tray
• A textured book cover or box
No prior paper or fiber experience is needed.
Please note: this is not a paper-making class. Instead, you’ll learn how to transform pre-made hanji into a unique artistic medium.
Tuition for this workshop is $140. This workshop is suitable for all levels. All materials are included in the tuition.
