Step inside history’s most captivating dining rooms with bestselling author and architectural writer John Ota. From Claude Monet’s home in Giverny and Lucy Maud Montgomery’s manse to Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul and Downton Abbey, Ota explores twelve extraordinary spaces where art, architecture, and food come together.
With charm, insight, and original illustrations, each chapter reveals how dining rooms shape the way we live, gather, and celebrate. Discover the stories behind the rooms—and the meals once served there—with an era-accurate recipe from every location.
The Dining Room is a warm, visually rich journey through history and design, perfect for armchair travelers, history lovers, and anyone who believes the table is where life happens.
Samantha will join John for a Parkwood-specific show-and-tell, highlighting distinctive aspects of the Parkwood dining room to delight fans in the audience.
After the tea and talk, John will be selling, and signing copies of his book, The Dining Room for $35.00
If you are interested in buying his book, please bring cash.
John Ota has been involved with architecture and design since 1978, with degrees from Columbia University, the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia. His bestselling book The Kitchen was a 2021 Taste Canada Awards finalist and a 2021 Paris Gourmand Cookbook finalist in the book design category. After working in architecture in Toronto, New York, and Vancouver, and as lead on multiple Ontario Ministry of Culture projects, John now loves to travel the world visiting historic houses, cooking regional food, and meeting people of all backgrounds.
