"DIGGING DEEPER INTO MOVIES" FILM TALKFree admission!
The Art of the Director: Multimedia
Most filmmakers derive inspiration from a wide range of arts. Some even maintain important careers in other mediums, alongside or overlapping with their movies. In this session, we will highlight two famous cases of such versatility, linking their museum work in to their cinematic styles and narratives: Oscar winner Steve McQueen, who made his name in gallery art well before he began directing films; and the SAIC-trained Cannes champ Apichatpong Weerasethakul, whose features work as standalone experiences but often take shape in tandem with his touring exhibitions.
Recommended viewing: for McQueen, Hunger (2008), a Chicago International Film Festival Gold Hugo winner; for Weerasethakul, his peculiar Palme d’Or recipient Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010).
