The core of DBT is balancing acceptance and change. DBT helps individuals accept themselves and their experiences while also working toward meaningful changes in behavior, thinking, and relationships.
It includes four key skill areas:
Mindfulness (being present in the moment)
Distress Tolerance (handling crises without making them worse)
Emotion Regulation (managing and changing intense emotions)
Interpersonal Effectiveness (assertively setting boundaries and maintaining healthy relationships)
DBT is typically delivered through multiple components. Treatment often includes individual therapy, group skills training, phone coaching, and consultation teams for therapists — all designed to support comprehensive and consistent care.
