Webinar Series Description

DEVELOPMENTAL PRACTICES—Research-based Home Visiting

Developmental parenting refers to parent behaviors that support children’s early development and also to an intervention approach in which practitioners facilitate developmentally supportive parenting. To effectively promote developmental parenting, practitioners need skills and strategies to promote parenting interactions that are known to support children’s early development and to encourage what parents already do in their daily lives to support their children’s development. These skills and strategies work with parents from diverse ethnicities and backgrounds.

DP Webinar #2 – Collaborating with Caregivers & Home Visitors: Planning together with parents or home visitors by adapting to their strengths and supporting their development and confidence.

DP Webinar #3 – Coaching Parent-Child Interactions and Home Visitor-Family Interactions: Using observation tools to observe and provide feedback and collaborate with parents or home visitors to build their knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy

DP Webinar #4 – Communicating to Motivate Caregivers & Home Visitors (Karin Wilson): Using specific motivational interviewing strategies to engage and motivate caregivers and home visitors, particularly when there is resistance, with motivational interviewing expert Karin Wilson.

DP Webinar #5 – Creating Solutions to Challenges: Identifying challenges and problems in working with families or home visitors, working on specific concerns, generating and selecting ideas for solutions, and sharing these ideas with each other.

Additional Info:

What Developmental Parenting is about: Developmental parenting refers to parent behaviors that support children’s early development and also to an approach to home visiting in which practitioners facilitate developmentally supportive parenting. Our training is based on practices described in the book, Developmental Parenting: A Guide for Early Childhood Practitioners by Lori Roggman, Lisa Boyce, and Mark Innocenti, (Brookes Publishing, 2008) and informed by recent research on home visiting effectiveness.

To effectively promote developmental parenting, practitioners need tools and strategies to promote parenting interactions that are known to support children’s early development and to encourage what parents already do in their daily lives to support their children’s development. The HOVRS and PICCOLO tools were developed for home visiting practitioners and related professionals. Each require similar skills and strategies for using the tools to increase the quality and impact of home visiting. These tools, skills, and strategies work with parents from diverse ethnicities and backgrounds and have been used in home visiting and similar parenting support settings around the world.
