About this Event
All you need to know to design forests and woodland
A landscape professionals’ upskilling short course and workshop.
Presented by Richard Hellier, Landscape & Woodland Design Advisor, Forestry Commission.
This is an unprecedented time for woodland creation of all types and scales in the UK. There are Government targets across all landscape types, urban to rural, lowland to upland and including for protected landscapes. Now is a crucial time for landscape professionals to be better engaged in this significant landscape change. Current themes include woodland resilience, the use of lesser-known species, nature recovery, human health and wellbeing, natural beauty and landscape character, landscape and visual appraisal and the importance of integrated, multi-functional design skills. The landscape professional’s ability to graphically communicate change and to shape inspiring concepts working with a range of other professions including foresters, ecologists, historic environment specialists and local communities, to name just a few, is of real importance.
The course will cover UK Forestry Standard requirements and compliance for woodland design including capturing landscape context and site baseline, how to apply the seven woodland design principles and develop design concepts that enhance place and meet objectives. It will also explain the woodland design process and highlight casework schemes across England including South-East & London. We will also look at Woodland Edge design guidance and topics such as integrating patterns of enclosure into woodland. The format will be informal allowing opportunity for questions and include some straightforward exercises to encourage discussion and engagement.
