About this Event
Designing a University for my AuDHD Brain
Join us in person for an engaging, insightful session all about crafting a university experience that truly resonates with the AuDHD brain.
Facilitator: Molly Walters, Learning Support Supervisor, University of Plymouth
How might universities work differently if they were designed with neurodivergent minds in mind?
In this interactive, co-design workshop, Molly Walters shares her lived experience as an Autistic and ADHD (AuDHD) staff member and former student. Blending honesty, humour and practical reflection, Molly invites participants to rethink university systems through the lens of executive functioning, sensory overwhelm, communication differences, and energy management.
Using a light-hearted theme (she often describes herself as 'a fox — running cat software on dog hardware'), the session reframes the conversation away from 'fixing' neurodivergent individuals and towards a bigger question:
What would a university look like if it were designed with my brain in mind?
Participants can expect to explore key themes:
- Executive functioning
- Sensory environment
- Communication and interpretation
- Energy, time and pace
Looking at real challenges Molly has experienced, such as navigating implied expectations, decoding 'professional tone,' or managing environments that create sensory overload. Together, participants will generate practical design ideas and communication approaches that reduce ambiguity and remove unnecessary barriers.
The session concludes with shared reflections and practical adjustments Molly has implemented personally - reinforcing a powerful message:
It was never the brain that was the problem. It was the design.
This workshop is suitable for staff and students interested in inclusive practice, accessibility, wellbeing, and reimagining university culture through a strengths-based neurodiversity lens.
