Learn how global navigation satellite system (GNSS) can provide novel insights into the global health of tailings storage facilities (TSFs).
About this Event

ABSTRACT

The monitoring of movements of tailings storage facilities structures such as berms or dams is routinely conducted with in-ground instruments or surveying. In-ground instruments such as in-place inclinometer and multi-point borehole extensometers have the advantage of providing measurements from specified depths with frequent measurements, but they offer limited spatial coverage. Surveying provides spatial coverage limited only by the number of targets deployed, but measurements are not usually performed in real-time and are limited by harsh weather and personnel availability. Novel all-in-one global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers are shown to provide accurate and flexible monitoring for TSFs in Canada. We will show that they can be used to provide berm stability measurements during loading operations, with repeatability of the order of 2 to 4 mm. We will also show that they can be used to track long-term settlement of a tailings. Lessons will be shared regarding deployment, installation methods, power management in harsh weather, actual noise levels and understanding of long-term trends. GNSS measurements can enhance existing and new monitoring plans, providing novel insights into the global health of the structures.
