About this Event

Demystifying Parenting in an Online World

Children and young people are exposed to a range of media content in today’s world at fast speed. Media literacy is therefore becoming an essential skill for parents and carers to help support their children and young people.

Understanding the draw of media and an awareness of it’s impact on thinking, emotions, relationships and behaviour at different ages, will not only help parents and carers be less confused (and alarmed) about the benefits and harms, but also help children and young people make more informed decisions.

stem4 is the originator of Online Safety First Aid (OSFA), supported by Ofcom, initially rolled out to professionals working with children and adolescents and now being launched to parents and carers.

Dr Nihara Krause MBE Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Dr Richard Graham, both experts in this field, help parents and carers transfer their offline parenting skills into the online/digital world.

  • Neurodevelopment in young people and age appropriate online use
  • How Persuasive Design impacts upon young people
  • Strategies for discussing media engagement and content
  • Tips and strategies to help your young person find balance in their online and offline life

This talk, supported by the Wimbledon Foundation on stem4’s Youth Mental Health Day 2024 #ControlYourScroll, provides an introduction to our comprehensive online training Online Safety First Aid(OSFA) course for parents and carers that provides further details on how to distinguish between credible and misleading information, recognising the influence of media, understanding the impact of mental health conditions on online interactions, gender differences in engagement and their impact, and an opportunity to develop a family media strategy with the support of stem4’s helpful family media strategy template.
