Tikumu weaving demonstration and kōrero with Hamuera Manihera
Learn about the amazing properties and uses of the tikumu plant with kairāraka, Hamuera Manihera. Tikumu, also known as mountain daisy, is a small flowering plant often found growing in high altitudes. Tikumu is a taoka species to Kāi Tahu and it’s leaves have been long treasured by Māori weavers to create elegant, and weather proof garments.
Join Hamuera for a kōrero on the revitalisation of tikumu use through his own weaving practice, and a demonstration of how tikumu is prepared for use.
Hamuera Manihera (Ngāti Kuia, Ngāti Koata, Ngāti Apa, Ngāi Tahu) is a weaver who most recently has been dedicated to revitalising the practice of harvesting and weaving with tikumu. Hāmuera is the Kaitiaki Taonga Māori - Māori Taonga Collections Manager at Nelson Provincial Museum. In 2023 Hamuera completed a kahu tikumu, (a cloak made using tikumu leaves) named Te Heiwi, which is now cared for at Te Papa Tongarewa.
