About this Event
Many people come into our churches and need to talk. Some need to get a troubling event off their chest; others have more long-term problems but regular therapy is not an option. Led by tutors from the London Centre for Spiritual Direction, this is a free training session for non-clergy church members whose ministry involves listening to people in difficulty whom they don't know well. How do we begin the emotional triage? How do we listen to what's between the lines? How do we hear God?
Monday 24 June, 10.30-12.30. How might we hear someone’s story well?
Creating a Safe Space - understanding of good boundaries, the value of being listened to and basic listening skills.
Monday 1 July, 10.30-12.30. How might we hear where God might be saying something?
Holy Listening - listening for Spirit, spiritual movements, listening as part of healing (deeper listening skills).
Monday 8 July, 10.30-12.30. How to deal with material that is sensitive or burdening?
How to Let Go - understanding the meaning of hospitality, how to build a prayer practice to let go, supervision, and further practical resources to point someone to (help with homelessness, legal problems, etc).
This training is not intended for clergy (who have their own training from the Diocese), nor is it about developing a long-term counselling relationship. It is about those sudden situations where we are just able to be there for someone, and how we can show them God's love. The training is free but we ask people to commit to coming to all three sessions so that we can develop a good relationship between participants and the leaders. Places are limited to 12 people.
