About this Event
Commissioned by Create London for Westminster City Council, Decades is a major temporary public artwork transforming St Mary le Strand as part of the Strand Aldwych programme. Hosted by London Heritage Quarter, this special 35-minute guided tour combines history and contemporary art at one of London’s most iconic Baroque churches.
The tour begins inside St Mary le Strand, where Peter Maplestone, churchwarden and author of St Mary le Strand (2019), will share fascinating stories of the church’s past, its architecture, and how the pedestrianisation of the Strand has shaped the area.
Guests will then step outside to experience Decades, created by Manchester-based artist Louise Giovanelli in collaboration with David Chipperfield Architects. Marie Bak Mortensen, Director of Create London, will guide visitors through the themes, ideas and making of the work, and how it interacts with the church façade and surrounding streetscape.
Expect a rich mix of heritage, contemporary art and surprising stories. Free but ticketed; limited spaces.
Meeting Point: St Mary Le Strand entrance (inside gates)
