What is a Death Café?
A Death Café is a group-directed discussion of death. There is no agenda, objectives, or themes. It is not a grief support group or a counselling session.
Warmth & Words offers an accessible, respectful, and confidential space where people can come together to talk openly about death and dying — and to help reduce the taboo around these conversations.
What to expect
• A welcoming, informal setting
• People (often strangers) gathering to drink tea/coffee, eat cake and nibbles, and talk
• Conversation led by the group — you can listen, share, or simply be present
Why Death Cafés exist
Our intention is to:
• Increase awareness of death with a view to making the most of our finite lives
• Normalise death and recognise it as part of life
• Encourage open, thoughtful conversation in the community
About Death Cafés (background)
• Death Cafés are hosted all over the UK and internationally.
• There have been over 6,500 Death Cafés in 56 countries (numbers change — check the Death Café website for the most up-to-date figures).
• The Death Café model was developed by Jon Underwood in 2011, inspired by the work of Swiss sociologist Bernard Crettaz.
• Jon hosted the first Death Café in his mother’s living room — and it grew from there.
• Jon Underwood died in June 2017, leaving a wife and young family. His sister Jools continues his work.
