About this Event

Alan is an independent management consultant who works with large enterprises, UK government and the NHS on transformation, and on how they approach technology, data and AI. He’s an avid photographer specialising in bold, dramatic portraits and one of the founders of Tech Exchange Chesterfield.
About the session
Alan will provide a rare glimpse into how well-structured large enterprises tackle their aims and ambitions. Whether you’re a sole artist, a professional services company with 15 people or a manufacturing company with 500 people, Alan will make it relevant to you.
Large enterprises invest heavily in making sure their whole organisation is working towards the same goals. Most businesses, whatever their size, don’t have that clarity. This session borrows the skills and techniques from larger organisations and makes it practical for everyone in the room.
Alan will give you a compressed but genuinely useful grounding in how large organisations decide where they’re going and how they make that progress happen in practice. He’ll show you what’s worth taking from that approach, whether you’re a sole trader, a growing business or a leadership team inside a larger company.
Most of the session is hands-on. You’ll spend the majority of the time working through these ideas in relation to your own business, and working with other attendees to understand more about your own influences, aims, and approach to solving them.
Who this is for
This workshop will be useful for all types of businesses, for example:
• You’re a creative or early-stage founder with a broad sense of purpose but you find yourself reacting to things rather than driving them. You know you’re busy but you’re not always sure it’s the right kind of busy.
• You run a smaller team of people and growth has largely been instinct-led. You’ve never really written a strategy, or if you have, it didn’t stick. You’d like a framework that helps you articulate where you’re heading and language you can share with your team.
• You’re in a larger business, say 200 to 500 people, where the leadership broadly agrees on direction but individual departments keep spinning up their own projects. Progress on the things that actually matter feels slower than it should.
What you’ll take away
By the end of the session, you’ll have:
1. A clearer picture of what’s driving your business and how you’re currently responding to it
2. More focus on your goals and what needs to happen to achieve them
3. A way of talking about strategy that actually makes sense for your situation
The exercises will use paper and post-its, but Alan will also show how digital tools can support this kind of thinking. Bring a laptop if you’d prefer to work that way.
