About this Event
join us Saturday, December 14th from 2-3pm for a gentle and grounding yoga class to move thru our grief together with Rave at Black Swan Yoga Capitol Hill.
this time of year comes with a lot of heaviness. family gatherings, some of us without safe family to gather with, reminders of passed and estranged loved ones, holidays, colonizer proclaimed "holidays", stressful finances, a new year, an upcoming inauguration—the list goes on. during a time of so much heaviness, i wanted to provide a space where we can soften, ground within ourselves, and feel supported to process some of this grief together.
in this cozy yoga class, we’ll gather together under the shimmery lights of the Black Swan studio to ground down and gently process our grief with a slow and mindful practice; all within a supported space guided by our lovely guest and teacher, Rave.
please bring your yoga mat, water, mask, and anything supportive for your practice including a comforting item if you'd like! blocks, blankets, straps, and bolsters will be available.

about our teacher:
rave (they/she): I'm a queer, Afro-Indigenous person and all of my lineages and ancestors have gifted me a fire in my heart to challenge settler colonial social "norms".I believe yoga should be both revered and accessible. I believe most things in life exist on a spectrum of contradiction and our yoga practice is no different. My teaching centers this tension as well as choice. Too much of this practice exists in the world to be contained to an hour long asana practice and though, I do my best to continue to point to the yoga practice in our lives. The spiritual element of our practice serves not to disconnect and numb us from the world around us but to connect us in a deeper and greater way to our shared humanity and make us more active participants in our lives and in the world in order to make lasting, meaningful, social change in whatever ways we are individually called. In my asana classes, you can expect some challenge alongside lots of options, juicy opportunities to open, many reminders of your ability to choose and change your mind in any given moment, and linked breath and movement set to sensual playlists in order to support you in setting down your thinking brain and accessing your deeper knowing.
My yoga journey began in 2012 when after 15 years, I began to transition out of the dance world and into strength training. I found yoga at my local gym and used it as a supplement to weight lifting because frankly, I hated stretching! It quickly began to be a very regular part of my life and by 2015 I was practicing sometimes 8 times a week and found myself reading yogic texts in my spare time for fun. I completed my first 200 hour teacher training that next year and transitioned into becoming a career yoga teacher. Since then, I have completed multiple trainings including a trauma informed yoga teacher training and went on to get my license in Social Work. I will say, that while trainings mean something, they don't mean everything. I really believe that some knowledge cannot be taught but rather must be experienced and I work every day to de-center institutional knowledge as the most valid form of knowledge.
