These 2, two-hour workshops, can be utilised as they are – or augmented with additional CPD hours of pre or post workshop reading.

Workshop 1 (02.07.24 - 18:30-20:30)
The workshop will focus on mental health issues in deaf children and young people, and interpreter training.
Dr Sophie Roberts, a consultant psychiatrist with Deaf Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, will be leading the workshop. She is part of a specialized CAMHS team that caters to Deaf Children and Families in the Northern region, offering expert assessments and interventions. The team consists of both Deaf and hearing staff members who are bilingual and bicultural. Dr Roberts has expertise in British Sign Language and a keen interest in children with attachment issues and developmental trauma impacting their mental health.
The workshop will cover topics such as mental health problems in deaf children, including issues like mental illness, attachment, trauma, how to recognize them and strategies for support.
Workshop 2 (17.07.24 - 18:30-20:30)
Vicci Ackroyd qualified as an interpreter more than 20 years ago! She has worked as a communication support worker in education across all age ranges, then a community interpreter for Leeds interpreting service, and then for Deaf CAMHS; as well as working freelance in various settings.
Hayley Lafferty is also been a qualified interpreter for 22 years, and has extensive experience in working in mental health domain, including inpatient, forensic services and community mental health teams. In the last 15 years she has specialised in child and adolescent mental health interpreting focusing on a systemic approach of interpreting.
Vicci and Hayley have worked with National Deaf CAMHS in York and Newcastle which is part of the Northern Arm of the national service. During this time, they have been involved in various projects and evaluations focusing their work around understanding how interpreters work within a specialist service exploring interpreting models, deaf and hearing people working together, the adaptation of assessments, interventions and resources for deaf children, young people and their families.
This workshop will take attendees on a journey into an introduction to the Kaleidoscope model used in deaf CAMHS for working systemically. During this workshop Hayley and Vicci will describe the Kaleidoscope model which includes effective interpreting strategies when working with those who are involved in CAMHS interactions such as children/young people, families, and significant others. It will also look at how we work as inter-professionals and the impact of the interpreter on the setting and interactions. There will be opportunity to think about its application to your work as in interpreter in CAMHS specifically, however the strategies can be applied to other domains.
