Stiv Bators, Cheetah Chrome, Jimmy Zero, Johnny Blitz and Jeff Magnum were still on the road as Frankenstein when the band from Cleveland got a gig at the famous punk rock club CBGB in Manhattan through their friend Joey Ramone. There they performed for the first time as the Dead Boys and immediately found their way into the New York punk scene with an enthusiastic fan base. With the support of CBGB's owner Hilly Kristal as band manager, the Dead Boys managed to get their hard three-chord punk signed to the record label Sire Records. The debut album "Young, Loud & Snotty" was released in 1977 and in the same year the boys played as opening acts for Iggy Pop and The Damned on their british tours.
Dead Boys' music was celebrated and praised in the music press, but there was largely no positive response in the US rock scene and the debut album sales been pretty bad. A second album was produced, but was too "hard" according to the label's expectations. After a few changes, "We Have Come For Your Children" finally appeared in 1978 with the song "Ain't It Fun", which was later called a classic, but even this could not prevent the band from breaking up in 1979. In addition, lead singer Stiv Bators died in 1990 as a result of a car accident.
Not an easy time for this talented and impressive band. Despite everything, the Dead Boys left a clear mark and shaped the path of American punk. Today the remaining members of the Dead Boys are still on stage and have remained true to themselves and their music. After more than 40 years of existence, they are now veterans of the genre, delighting fans of heavy metal and punk rock and inspiring big rock bands like Guns N' Roses, who, for example, published a cover of "Ain't It Fun".
