About this Event

Join fellow IAC conference goers on a 3- hour walking tour of the National Mall, White House, and the monuments - along with an orientation with some history of DC and a little about Jews and Judaism in America. The tour will be given by a licenced, proffesional DC guide.

We will begin the tour with a view of the White House from the historic Lafayette Square and a short orientation on the US capital.

From there we will pass through the Treasury adjacent to the White House, and we will reach the new World War 1 memorial in Pershing Square, which was recently erected - 106 years after the end of that war.

Next is the Washington Monument - the obelisk that became the symbol of the city and is a commemorative site for the general who played a central part in the victory over the British in the American Revolution, and was later elected the first president of the young republic.

From there we will continue towards the World War 2 War Memorial, an impressive monument that documents the progress of the war on both fronts and commemorates the fallen and missing in the wall of Gold Stars.

Next in line is the minimalist memorial wall that simply commemorates all the fallen in the Vietnam War, and deliberately looks like a deep cut in the body of the nation. Next to it we see several more statues that were placed after the construction of the monument - a few years after the end of the war and the fall of Saigon.

We will also look towards the Einstein monument, which is located in the National Academy of Sciences.

Adjacent to the reflection pool we will visit the impressive Lincoln Memorial - commemorating the 16th president - the founder of the Republican party, the liberator of the slaves and the one who won the Civil War. We will stand on the steps that were a witness to American history, and we will see the Washington Monument reflected in the pool.

A short walk will bring us to the symbolic Korean War memorial - depicting an infantry company during a sweep, with a slightly different commemorative wall.

If time permits we will cross the road to the Martin Luther King Jr monument- the only one that is not for a president on the Mall - the civil rights leader who was murdered at a young age

We will end the tour at the Tidal Basin - from here you can take the Circulator bus for 1$ back to the White House area, or atch a cab/uber back to your hotel.
