Overview
The very practice of phone coaching often induces anxiety in clinicians, cognizant that individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) frequently struggle with emotional instability, suicidality, and relational difficulties. Consequently, clinicians may imagine phone coaching calls to occur at all/odd hours, envision patients so distressed that they will yell or act out on calls, and fear they may have staying on the phone for hours while disrupting their leisure time with suicidal threats and crises. Even more frequently, clinicians cite concerns about fostering dependency or blurring therapeutic relationship boundaries such that the client starts to see the therapist as a friend they can just call up for support. However, despite these beliefs, the data and evidence show a different reality in which patients benefit in skills generalization and rarely, if ever, do these concerns arise. To address this gap in knowledge between perceived realities of phone coaching and research, this webinar will provide evidentiary basis for conducting phone coaching while maintaining healthy therapeutic boundaries.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify at least 2 functions of phone coaching.
- Describe 3 skills to employ when maintaining appropriate patient boundaries in phone coaching.
