David James Duncan is an American novelist, essayist, and fly fisherman whose novels — The River Why (1983)and The Brothers K (1992) — have become beloved classics of American spiritual literature, weaving together baseball, ecology, family, and faith with deep humour and hard-won grace. Both won the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award; The Brothers K was a New York Times Notable Book and an American Library Association Best Books Award winner. His essay collection My Story as Told by Water was a National Book Award finalist, and his writing has appeared in Harper's, Outside, Orion, and The Sun. His most recent novel, Sun House (2023), has been hailed as a crowning achievement — a vast, luminous book about faith, community, grief, and the attempt to live a worthy life in a beautiful and broken world. He lives in Montana, where he has long been a passionate voice for river conservation and what he calls “nonreligious literature of faith.”
