Dave Holland is a renowned bassist, composer and bandleader with an abiding passion for musical expression. He has dedicated himself tirelessly to creating consistently innovative ensembles, which has propelled a professional career of more than fifty years. As a guiding light on acoustic and electric bass, Holland has earned top honors in his field. To that end, he holds multiple Grammy Awards and nominations and received the title of NEA Jazz Master in 2017. People widely revere Holland’s virtuosic technique and rhythmic feel, and he remains much in demand. Moreover, he shapes his sound with an open-eared respect of a formidable spread of styles and sounds. Additionally, you can hear his playing on hundreds of recordings, including more than thirty as a leader.
In groundbreaking groups led by legends like Miles Davis, Betty Carter, Herbie Hancock and Anthony Braxton, Holland gained prominence. He also collaborated with Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Stan Getz, Sam Rivers, Jack DeJohnette and John McLaughlin. However, he carries that enviable history with little fanfare and extreme humility. To him, what matters most is the immediate musical project at hand. Fittingly, today people celebrate him more for the bands that he continues to assemble, record and perform with. Recently he’s worked with Steve Coleman, Robin and Kevin Eubanks, Jason Moran, Chris Potter, Eric Harland, Craig Taborn and more.
Holland is a Fellow of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, where he studied from1965-68. Further, he has received honorary doctorates from Birmingham Conservatoire and Royal Academy of Music in England, and Boston’s Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory. Recently, the Royal Academy of Music made Holland an Honorary Member. Additionally, this is a rare honor, as membership is limited to 300 living musicians.
