BlueStem Jazz | Dave has performed with internationally-acclaimed jazz artists, including Bruce Barth, Peter Bernstein, Rick Germanson, Benny Golson, Slide Hampton, Vincent Herring, Brian Lynch, Jack McDuff, Charles McPherson, Melvin Rhyne, John Swana and Phil Woods. He performs at clubs and festivals around the country, including Smalls (NYC), The Django (NYC), Winter’s (Chicago), Twins (Washington DC), The Green Mill (Chicago) and Chris’ Jazz Café (Philadelphia), and the Chicago Jazz Festival.
Trumpeter Russ Johnson is a recent Midwest transplant after spending 23 years as an important member of New York City’s jazz community. He has 7 recordings as a leader or co-leader and performed on more than 75 recordings as a sideman. Russ has worked alongside many of the legendary figures in jazz including Lee Konitz, Steve Swallow, Bill Frisell, and Joe Lovano. In addition, he has recorded and/or performed with a long list of the most prominent musicians currently on the international jazz scene, including Myra Melford, Ken Vandermark, and Tony Malaby. Russ has performed in more than 40 countries across the globe. His groups have recently performed at the Chicago, Winter Jazz Fest (NYC) Hyde Park, (Chicago) and Bergamo, (Italy) jazz festivals.
Geof Bradfield’s work as a composer and performer on saxophones and clarinets embraces intersections of modern jazz and other streams of African Diaspora music, drawing inspiration from Charlie Parker, Melba Liston, Lead Belly, Shona mbira music, and Gullah spirituals. Born in Houston, TX, Bradfield has performed throughout North America, Europe, Russia, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, sharing the stage with artists such as Randy Weston, Dana Hall, Clark Sommers, Brian Blade, Anna Webber, Orrin Evans, Jeff Parker, Matt Ulery, and Ryan Cohan. His work is featured on 50+ CDs including eight albums as a leader that have garnered critical accolades from the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and NPR. Nate Chinen describes his Yes, and…Music for Nine Improvisers (Delmark Records) as “an album of chamber-esque color and oft-surprising texture, because Bradfield is the sort of composer who creates room for departure.” He has received grants and awards from Chamber Music America, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, DCASE, Illinois Arts Council, and the Mellon Foundation. The Downbeat Critics Poll has named him a Rising Star Tenor Saxophonist and Arranger multiple years.
Clay Schaub is an in-demand bassist and educator in the Midwest. Performing more than 300 concerts each year, Clay is a featured artist for Origin Records, faculty at the Milwaukee Jazz Institute, and author of “How To Build Walking Bass Lines in 14 Days” - a method book for beginning jazz bassists. Clay worked for years in the New York City jazz scene and has performed regularly with Russ Johnson, Geof Bradfield, Michael Kanan, Steve Ash, Greg Ruggiero, Gregory Tardy, David Bixler, Pamela York, Eric Jacobson, and Bruce Barth among others. He currently lives in Milwaukee with his wife and children.
