Who should attend?
This comprehensive half day course provides a practical approach to understanding data protection in the context of archives and, museums. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills needed to navigate data protection in real-world scenarios. Attendees will also gain an understanding of the UK’s key data protection legislation (the UK General Data Protection Regulations (UK GDPR), the Data Protection Act 2018) and how it relates specifically to archives and museums.
This course will be of benefit to staff at all levels in Archives and Museums and particularly those with a compliance focused role and/or senior leaders. The course is for those with a good foundational understanding in data protection matters.

Learning Objectives:
- Recognise the background of applicable laws (including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), Data Protection Act 2018.
- Define personal data in the context of archived information.
- Identify legal basis and how these relate to archival records.
- Recognise the concept of compatible processing.
- Identify the required safeguards when processing special category data.
- Describe how the storage limitation principle applies in an archiving context.
- Consider security issues which might apply to archives and museums.
- Recognise the different data subject rights (including right of access, and right to be forgotten) in relation to archiving.
- Understand how the exemptions are applicable to archiving and what these mean in practice.
