ANNOUNCING: TJI Lead Trumpeter forms his own big band and composes 11 big band pieces!Daniel Estrada (Valenzuela) is going to be a senior at Sunnyside High School and he’s been one of the top trumpeters in the nationally recognized, award-winning Tucson Jazz Institute (TJI) Ellington Big Band. Daniel has done something no other TJI student has done before. He has organized his own big band and composed 11 big band pieces!
The premiere of the Daniel Estrada Orchestra is Monday, June 8, 6:30 & 8 pm at The Century Room, 311 East Congress, Tucson, and it’s appropriately titled “First Time.”
The title was inspired by Daniel’s favorite record – First Time! The Count Meets the Duke – (recorded July 6, 1961, Columbia’s 30th Street Studio NYC, released 1962) featuring Duke Ellington and Count Basie side by side at the piano. [Stereo: Basie’s band was featured on the left channel and Ellington’s on the right channel.] Hearing Duke’s compositions hooked Daniel and opened his ears to the wonder and appreciation of Duke’s work. Daniel’s compositions lean more toward Ellington’s writing style in the mid-20th century.
Motivation came from Daniel’s love of this music and the people who came before – Ellington, Basie, Thad Jones, and Dizzy Gillespie. Some titles of his pieces include Sentimentality, Silk Rose, Desert Flow, and The Way My Heart Sings for You.
“Destined to be a leader,” is how Scott Black, co-director/owner at TJI describes Daniel. “He keeps the TJI Ellington Big Band swinging, is a great soloist and lead trumpeter. “
Come listen to the band and visit with TJI past and present students as well as professionals in the community. Show them some love and support. And give a shout out to Daniel for this massive undertaking.
