Dancing into the Metaverse: a real-time virtual dance experience

WebXR pre-meet: 6pm

Online showcase: 7pm

In-person showcase: 7pm at Goldsmiths, University of London (exact location information will be provided before the event)

About this event

In this immersive showcase performance we share a form of digital-dance installation that sees three dancers move together in real-time within a virtual space through remote connection. The intimate interaction between distant dancers occurs within a computer-generated landscape, with their avatars spinning out shapes, light, and particles that weave and intertwine to give a feeling of virtual touch and embodied connection.

Dancers in New York and the UK wear a motion-capture system that captures their movement and streams it to the other dancers in real-time. The choreographic performance takes the form of a semi-improvisational interaction, in a set of scenarios designed to explore senses of virtual presence, proximity, and narrative though projected visuals.

This hybrid online and in-person showcase event is the outcome of an AHRC-funded research project, and will be followed by a short Q&A with the dancers, researchers, and digital creators.

There is also a pre-show online gathering in which we are inviting audience members to enter our unique interactive WebXR environment, where dancers can animate a virtual character in real-time. The environment uses a browser-based social VR platform, allowing audiences to join remotely to participate with a VR headset, or simply from a phone or laptop. All details will be emailed to registered attendees on the day.

As Being Human festival events are free, not everyone who asks for tickets comes to the events. To make sure we have a full house we allocate more tickets than there are places. Admission is on a first come, first served basis, so please arrive in good time for the start of the event.

On Saturday the 13th November we are hosting a series of participatory workshops addressed to a specialist academic, dance and tech audience. Participants will have the chance to suit up and dance with our collaborator in New York, and furthermore will be able to don a VR headset to enter into a unique interactive WebXR environment. If you would like to join us please email directly [email protected].
