Get swept up in the infectious rhythm of Cumbia, a beloved tropical dance known throughout Latin America and beyond. Rooted in a vibrant fusion of African, Indigenous, and Western influences, cumbia’s steady beat and playful turns make it impossible to stay still.
What Is Cumbia Dance?
Cumbia is primarily a partner dance filled with turns, groove, and joyful energy, but it’s also easy to learn and always fun. The evening begins with a 30-minute beginner-friendly lesson, followed by social dancing to a variety of cumbia styles from different countries across Latin America.
No experience required, just come ready to move and enjoy the rhythm.
Dance Instructor
Jimi Jimi
Jimi fell in love with cumbia in the late 1990s and has been dancing to its rhythm ever since. He has studied with teachers and dancers on both sides of the border and regularly travels to Mexico to continue learning and connecting with the tradition. Jimi previously taught cumbia for many years at Social Dance Studio in South Minneapolis and has worked with numerous sonideros and musicians over the years.
