DescriptionOnce associated with poverty, mending can be both bold and beautiful, while promoting sustainability as the repair becomes part of the history of the piece.In this practical workshop attendees will learn repair skills, while exploring the visual language of textiles. Holes and worn surfaces can express broken systems, or symbolise emotional trauma with the act of mending being a metaphor for mental healing. The workshop will cover: -

Patching
Strengthening stitches
Darning

The workshop is suitable for all abilities. There will be practical demonstrations of darning and patching techniques, plus a PowerPoint presentation to inspire further exploration. The session is aimed at anyone with an interest in textiles, wishing to explore the artistic potential of visible repair.Materials and Equipment List

A small garment, such as a shirt, trousers or socks, or household items which needs mending
Needles, and if planning to darn a long, largish eyed needle
Thread, which will easily pass through your chosen item
Scissors, for both fabric and threads
Fabric for patching, ideally something firm but not too thick
Pins
A darning mushroom, or small plastic yoghurt pot or similar
