What does it mean – and take – to be culturally responsive?
There are many different aspects of a culturally responsive journey; first and foremost, cultural self-reflection and reflexivity are key. Please come join us if you are interested in learning more, trying out some exercises, and making your own plan.
What does it mean to be culturally responsive as a psychologist?
The importance of cultural responsiveness in our practice is being increasingly highlighted and required by the core competencies of the profession. In this masterclass, we will discuss what cultural responsiveness is and how it relates to (and/or differs from) related concepts, such as cultural competence and cultural safety. In particular, this presentation will focus on developing skills in cultural self-reflection and reflexivity, which are needed when traveling on a culturally responsive journey. We will try out some reflective and reflexive exercises in the time we have together, encouraging you to ask yourself some new questions about your own culture and practice. In so doing, you will understand and challenge some cultural assumptions that are rarely questioned in the course of our workday.
At the end of the talk, you will have begun your way on the self-responsiveness journey, and have a plan as to the ‘next steps’ that you can take with you as you go forward.
