Ciclon
It is no slight irony that director Santiago Alvarez first appeared on the radar of world cinema under the force of a hurricane. Ciclon (1963) was the first Cuban film to be recognized beyond the shores of the island itself. The film covers the events of hurricane Flora’s sweeping over the Cuban provinces of Camagüey and Oriente in October 1963: the damage, the evacuation of the villages, and the aid to victims.
For the First Time
A traveling film projectionist brings the film Modern Times (1936) to a secluded village that has never seen a motion picture before. The entire film was shot on April 12, 1967 in the village itself, and shows the cinema truck traveling to the village, as well as interviews with both the projectionists and several villagers. The film shown was the Chaplin feature, Modern Times, on a portable 16 mm projector in the back of the truck. The film was very well received.

Cerro Pelado
Santiago Alvarez's tribute to Cuba's sporting triumphs is no less breathtaking. A ship of athletes training on the rough seas becomes a symbol of Castro's Cuba, the games projected on the backdrop of political struggle: "This is the story of a ship and of a sports delegation whom the ENEMY tried to stop from participating in the Tenth Central American and Caribbean Games."

79 Springs
This film memorializes the leader of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, on the occasion of his death. It narrates the story of a life which is also the story of a nation-recounting his important accomplishments in the struggle against colonialism and imperialism.
