About this Event

Day 2, Slot 1 of the BUFF 2024 programme (find the full programme at www.britishurbanfilmfestival.co.uk)

Through a grant from local charity Creative Minds BUFF has been able to host a series of screenings with a core focus on mental health.

The British Urban Film Festival (BUFF) was formed in July 2005 to showcase urban independent cinema in the absence of any such state-sponsored activity in the UK. BUFF is the longest standing black-owned film festival in the United Kingdom.

Images of a Train Man

Director: Andrew Ball-Shaw

An insight into the life of David Roy Ball, captured through his 50+ years of camera work, with over 1000+ films and videos in his library, including cine film (super 8 and standard 8), VHS video tape, mini disc, and 1080 HD digital recordings. The love of all things steam train, diesel train and the like are all detailed and passionately conveyed through David’s visual imagery and audible documentation of the subject, along with commentary on many other subjects captured on camera over his lifetime since first picking up a cine camera in the late 1960s.

What Remains

Director: Geoff Brokate

After the death of her husband by suicide Gillian Brooks tried to make sense of the events and preserve memories for her children. So she wrote it down as a story. As part of her drama degree Gillian’s daughter Mary took her mum’s letter as inspiration for a powerful and emotional performance piece, designed “as a response to the need for dialogue and understanding of mental health issues and in particular, the effects of suicide on close family members and loved ones.” Mary’s performance was then made into a film with the help of award-winning filmmaker Geoff Brokate.

We Will Be Brave - UK PREMIERE

Director: Chrisann Hessing

WE WILL BE BRAVE follows the journey of Toronto’s “Good Guise” collective, who are committed to sparking conversations around healthy masculinity through art. From photography and beatboxing to poetry and martial arts, the artists in the collective share their unique lived experiences and welcome others to join in their mission of finding radical alternatives to shame and punishment.
