Join TCM founders Joseph Ijoyemi and Lison Sabrina Musset, along with artist Birungi Kawooya, for an intimate symposium on creative rest and wellbeing, inspired by Cristina Iglesias’ The Shore. This evening invites members to pause, reflect, and explore the balance between creativity and care.
The discussion will delve into how artists can sustain their practice through rest, renewal, and self-awareness recognising that creative rest is not a luxury but a necessity. Together, the speakers will share their personal experiences with burnout culture in the art industry and offer practical tips on how to prevent it.
Speakers Bios:
Birungi Kawooya
Birungi Kawooya is a British-Ugandan wellbeing and liberation researcher, creative facilitator, and artist whose practice is grounded in Black feminisms, Afro-somatic movement, and community care. Working with natural fibres, Ugandan batik, sculpture, and sound, she creates installations that explore rest, repair, and resistance for Black women and gender-expansive people.
Through her Mindful African Art playshops and installations, Birungi transforms creative play into a site of research, inviting participants to imagine liberation and co-create futures rooted in tenderness, embodiment, and joy. She has conducted research with Race On The Agenda, Healing Justice London, and Makerere Institute of Social Research to nurture conditions for collective care and liberation.
Her work has been shown at Science Gallery London, KLA Art ’24, The New Art Gallery Walsall, The Portico Library, and Hastings Contemporary. She has also created public artworks for Kensington & Chelsea Art Week and The World Reimagined.
Joseph Ijoyemi:
Joseph Ijoyemi is a Nigerian-Swedish contemporary artist living and working in London. He draws his inspiration from life experiences and conversations, so his work often contains a narrative. His work can be both figurative and abstract and combines a novel use of imagery and materials.He received his MA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins in 2023.
Joseph’s artistic practice serves as a platform for dialogue and discourse, encouraging viewers to reflect upon the intricacies of restitution, cultural heritage, and the notion of identity. By employing various mediums and techniques, he creates immersive and evocative experiences, inviting viewers to engage with his work on both an intellectual and emotional level.
His exceptional work and dedication have garnered recognition and accolades, including the prestigious Helen Scott Lidgett Award, supported by the ACME. Additionally, Joseph’s artistic prowess was acknowledged when he was shortlisted for the Evening Standard Prize 2023 that included a group exhibition. Notably, Joseph’s artistic journey continues to soar as he has been selected to showcase his work at the highly regarded New Contemporaries 2023 exhibition, solidifying his position as a promising and emerging artist within the contemporary art scene.
Lison Sabrina Musset
Lison Sabrina Musset is a French-Brazilian artist and curator, and the co-founder of The Collective Makers (TCM),
Lison has contributed to mentoring initiatives at Somerset House and the British Council, offering guidance to early-career creatives.
In 2023, she co-curated Our Connection to Water at the National Maritime Museum, where she now oversees the institution’s artist residency programme. That same year, she was included in the Evening Standard’s Art Power Players List. She also serves on the board of the Atlantic Worlds Gallery at Royal Museums Greenwich. Lison also lectures part-time on the MA Public and Performative Practices course at London Metropolitan University.
