Session Description: Join us for this workshop to explore how clinicians and agencies can provide linguistically and culturally appropriate services for immigrant children and families through holistic, trauma-informed, and strengths-based supports across the spectrum of micro- and macro- interventions. Participants will consider specific emotional, behavioral, and relational needs related to experiences of immigration; characteristics of relevant clinical modalities; and ways that incorporating macro-level interventions can more fully address overall wellbeing.

Workshop Level: Intermediate

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

Describe the ways that three potential epicenters of trauma may affect immigrant children and families, including impacts on emotions, behavior, and relationships

Identify multiple micro- and macro- level interventions that address the therapeutic environment, as well as the individual needs of immigrant children and families

Advocate for culturally and linguistically appropriate, to encourage holistic practices within their practice setting.

Presenter Bio: Karen E. Latus, LMSW

Karen E. Latus, LMSW, is the director of SÍ, a Tennessee-based nonprofit that provides pro bono mental health evaluations for asylum seekers. She is also a federally funded consultant for the University of Maryland School of Social Work, an adjunct professor for the University of Tennessee and East Tennessee State University, and a bilingual associate for Pro Bono Counseling’s mental health WARMLine. Her prior experience in the fields of interpreting and education have been instrumental in her current work on immigration, school social work, trauma-responsiveness, and anti-racist practice. Karen was honored and awarded the 2019 Community Impact Award by the Tennessee Conference on Social Welfare.

Workshop registrants will receive a code prior to the webinar to log on to Zoom and participate in the online session.

IMPORTANT: Attendance will be monitored. Participants must be logged on to the meeting by the workshop start time and participate in the entire event in order to earn CE credit.

Pro Bono Counseling is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Pro Bono Counseling maintains responsibility for this program and its content. The Maryland Boards of Social Work Examiners and Professional Counselors and Therapists certify that this program meets the criteria for two (2) credit hours of continuing education for social workers (Category 1), professional counselors, and therapists (Category A) licensed in Maryland.

CE credit is granted to participants with documented attendance at individual workshops. Attendance is monitored. Credit will not be granted to registrants who log on late or depart early from a session. It is the responsibility of registrants to comply with these requirements.
