About this Event
Please note: Due to demand, this workshop is a repeat of the event held on Saturday 20 April.
Washi is an ideal material as it is both delicate and strong in equal measure. There’s no sewing required in the assembly. Author/illustrator Claudine Crangle will guide you through the process, beginning by using prepared patterns as a starting point. Participants will be encouraged to experiment and customize to make their own unique selection of garments.
Expect to complete 4-6 pieces of varying degrees of complexity. Garments will be made from natural unsized washi, which may also be painted with watercolours to beautiful effect. Prepare for a day of play as you contour paper into pieces that express your personal style!
Once our mini wardrobe is complete, we will look at potential ways to display our favourite pieces individually or as a collection of tiny works of decorative art.
All essential materials and tools will be provided. Participants are asked to bring:
- Pencil, soft or kneaded eraser and notebook
- We are working small – bring reading glasses if you wear them!
- Tweezers can be useful
- Watercolour paints** to experiment and a small to medium sized brush
- Rag to dampen (for keeping fingers clean)
- If you have your own small, sharp scissors please bring them.
- your lunch*
Heritage Washi is a term for Japanese papers that are still made by hand by skilled craftspersons using the earth-friendly techniques and materials of their ancestors. These papers are painstakingly made from the inner bark of 3 renewable species of plants - kozo, mitsumata and gampi. No fillers have been added, no harsh caustic soda used to hasten the process and no bleach to whiten the colour. As a result, these papers are very strong, absorbent and archival with a fine beautiful surface. They await your touch to complete the conversation.
*There will be a 30 - 40 minute break for lunch. Refrigeration and some small appliances are available for participant use.
** The Japanese Paper Place has some watercolour paint and brushes. Please let us know if you will need to use them.
