The Cassel Hospital has been helping people with their mental health for over 100 years. It is a unique NHS service in the UK, offering residential (live-in) therapy for people with complex emotional and mental health needs. Treatment is free and voluntary, and unlike many hospitals, there are no locked doors. Patients are encouraged to build supportive relationships with each other, as well as with staff, friends and family. The hospital is known for its “therapeutic community” approach, where everyone, patients and staff, play a part in the healing process. This way of working focuses on understanding emotions, relationships and personal experiences.
“Hospital in the Mind” is an oral history film about The Cassel, as told by four generations of patients, nurses and therapists. The film explores themes of recovery, hope and change, while showing how the hospital has evolved over time. The documentary offers a unique insight into one of the world’s first therapeutic communities.
