Presentation 1 - Construction of heavy civils reinforced concrete structures

Glenn Boyd and Martin Montgomery are presenting their experiences of the construction of heavy civils reinforced concrete structures various of flagship assets on HS2 between Buckinghamshire and Warwickshire.

The presentation will first take a reflective learning approach by Martin on reinforced concrete designs from insitu pours to specialist precast elements to promote best practice concrete design and detailing for those structural and civil engineers in the design offices.

Martin will then be followed by Glenn Boyd who will discuss the current gaps in knowledge in the concrete conformity and identity testing codes in the British Standards suite as well as the impact of concrete material variability on key design parameters.

Presentation 2 - City Centre Experience / Design and Detailing for Basement Waterproofing and Construction Using Caltite System Concretes

Edward Rea will present on the use of Caltite system concretes being used on major projects within the UK and discuss Caltite Concrete benefits within the waterproofing industry, the presentation aims to highlight changes within the industry over the last 20years from Stand-alone systems to dual system requirements within changes to BS8102:2022

Presentation 3 – Design opportunities realised

Welcome to the Social Hub, a remarkable addition to Glasgow's Merchant City. As part of a £300 million masterplan, this innovative project marks the UK debut of The Social Hub (TSH) development, featuring a 496-bedroom hotel. Beyond hotel accommodation, the Social Hub seamlessly integrates co-living and co-working spaces, alongside a bar and restaurant, conference rooms, a fitness centre, and thoughtfully landscaped open spaces. At its heart lies a vibrant public square, designed to foster community connections.

Today's presentation will explore the unique design opportunities this masterplan project provided, the collaborative dynamics with subcontractors, and the challenges faced in transforming ideas into reality. We’ll also delve into the creative utilization of the building’s concrete frame and the innovative solutions implemented to bring this ambitious vision to life.

Peter Hendry is a Director at Woolgar Hunter, with extensive experience from design-focused roles across Glasgow, London, and Saudi Arabia. At Woolgar Hunter, Peter provides strategic design leadership and develops strong client relationships, managing projects across various sectors. Peter is recognised for his versatility, embracing projects of all scales and complexities. His work includes the refurbishment of Kelvin Hall and award-winning developments like New Park Square, recognized Nationally by the Concrete Society (2023). Recent projects include Buchanan Wharf, MODA's Holland Park, and 177 Bothwell Street, demonstrating his innovative vision and commitment to design excellence.

John Bethune is Associate Director at Woolgar Hunter with experience working across sectors and through all stages of design. His experience delivering international projects has given him the opportunity to work with novel materials and complex geometry, as well as using new and emerging technologies for design, analysis and construction. Bringing this experience to Glasgow, he looks to use these technologies to assist engineers in exploring challenges such as reducing embodied carbon of buildings, design for manufacture and creating adaptable digital models.

Glenn Boyd is a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT). With over 35 years of experience in the construction industry, Glenn currently serves as a Technical Director at Arcadis, leading the Construction Services arm within Highways UK. He is also the Head of Construction Assurance on HS2, the UK’s flagship high-speed rail project. Glenn’s passion for construction—particularly concrete—has been long recognised; it’s often said that while some people like perfume, Glenn prefers concrete. This enthusiasm has led him to pursue a Doctoral Thesis focusing on precast concrete manufacturing in the UK, further cementing his expertise in the field.

Martin Montgomery is a Chartered Structural Engineer with 10+ years structural design.

His career began in steelwork fabrication design for the oil & gas offshore industry including lifting & rigging which laid the foundation for his move to onshore tackling complex temporary works, demolition, bridge design and refurbishment including various CAT III checking roles on long-span viaducts. For the last 2 years Martin has performed a resident engineer role on HS2 in both the NCA and G2S regions.

Edward Rea, the Major Projects and Key Accounts Manager for Cementaid UK, With over two decades of experience in the waterproof concrete industry and past chairman of the Northern Ireland Concrete Society, Edward has contributed to many high-profile projects across the UK and Ireland. His impressive portfolio includes work on the Wimbledon Tennis Club in London and the Barclays Campus in Glasgow. Edward's extensive experience and expertise will provide valuable insights into the detailing of basement waterproofing using the Caltite Systems in an urban setting.
