Synopsis
Evan Task, the boy prodigy, flies to his Planet B (Mars) with his special friend, an AI called Petra, and watched from superpositions by the vengeful wormhole ghost, Jo. With problems in engineering, an ambitious computer and non-cooperative Martian life-forms, Evan lands in trouble. Not even his invincible corporate ‘veil of impunity’ can protect him from the artist worms of Mars!
Appearing
Crosby is joined on stage by director and guest star, Tessa Marie Luminati. Together, they have created a Sci-Fi mash of profound undertaking and banal execution. Expect to be charmed, outraged, disgusted and tickled… come ready to throw worms.
About
Corporare (rhymes with mornay) looks at the corporate body, a metaphor of madness made real. ‘Founder’ entrepreneurs, govern without care for the harm of worker, customer, community or environment. Their blue sky vision -freedom, opportunity, outer space - is like the first line of every horror story: ‘The day was as hopeful as the blue sky above…’ until it wasn’t. Space is a storied frontier of illusion: Solaris, 2001, Alien… Corporare too wonders how humans can be quite so deluded. ‘Space, the final frontier’, it is a silent and cold vacuum where the loudest must finally listen.
Research
Crosby wrote the first draft alone in the studio throughout 2022. He took two positions, that of CEOs who steer through ‘negative externalities’ and that of those who suffer the consequences. Environmental disaster, injury and fatality, corruption - there is no shortage of examples, Deepwater Horizon, Mariana Dam, Exon-Valdez, HIH, Juukan Gorge, Panguna, car autopilot/accelerator/door malfunction -sometimes a head rolls, a fine is paid an apology is read, never a prison sentence. In one sense, Corporare is an opportunity for audience to throw ripe tomatoes at the objects of their disgust -in our case, it’s worms.
Practice
Crosby and Luminati, of The Thursday Group practice and explore Suzuki and Grotowski training. With Corporare, they reached for Laban technique for movement sets with characterisation and… just to bust things up. Stick around for a chat on making theatre, we’d love to meet up.
Quotes
“What a show!” “Just bloody gorgeous.” “Elegant, funny, gently caustic.” “I felt so privileged to live in a city where this kind of event might happen, a coming together of artists to witness someone at the height of his expressive powers!”
