About this Event
Aspirations for the design and delivery of mental health care are that it is safe, effective and meaningful for service users. However, often the definitions of 'safe, effective and meaningful' differ between service providers and people who use, or are compelled to use, mental heath services. Trauma informed approaches highlight the importance of shared meanings between service providers and recipients, and the application of core principles to enable services to be accessible and effective for the largest group of service users: survivors of trauma. By using a trauma informed approach when designing or reforming mental health services, leaders can put the frameworks in place to enable the best possible practice for the frontline staff who deliver care.
Core Components is a series of courses by Peer Hub CIC that outline the core knowledge frameworks required for professionals new to specialist fields or looking to update their knowledge from recent developments in professional practice.
This online workshop is directed at decision makers and service developers who are involved in the planning of services, service design and/or service commissioning from team manager to executive level. The course content is a useful refresh of up to date knowledge for those who are already using principles of trauma informed care to design services. Leaders in partnership organisations that work closely with mental health providers, such as those in criminal justice, immigration, physical health, public health, education, social care etc, may also find value in this course.
Workshop Content:
This workshop will outline the core elements of a trauma informed organisation or service, and how those elements increase accessibility, relationships, collaboration and meaningful outcomes. It will draw from best practice in leadership, service design and culture change and robust research from academia, user-led/survivor research and patient experience data; alongside the existing body of evidence in relation to the impact and prevalence of trauma in people with mental health challenges. The course will cover:
- What we know about trauma and its prevalence and impact on people
- The principles of trauma informed care
- How the principles translate to service design
- Trauma informed organisational change: who do you need, how do you begin
- Identifying next steps towards safe, effective and meaningful trauma informed approaches for your organisation or team.
Led by professionals experienced in transforming teams and services, the workshop will guide attendees through the opportunities and barriers to implementing trauma informed approaches in new or existing services. Course content is drawn from national and international learning about best practice in statutory mental health sectors, voluntary/charitable sector and user-led organisations. The course is largely relevant to participants from the UK, but may be of interest to our international colleagues.
All attendees will receive a certificate of attendance that meets CPD requirements.
We welcome attendees with lived experience who are in, or aspire to, leadership roles in large organisations.
The workshop will be held over 3.5 hours (1/2 day). There will be 3x45 mins of faciliation with breaks and 15 mins Q&A with facilitators to close. The course is delivered on Zoom in English.
