About this Event
Start point: Coniston Tourist Information Centre car park
Length: 6.5km (4 miles) with 300m (984ft) of ascent
Time: 4.5 hours (approx.)
Walk grade: 4 (see grade description below)
A walk around the Coppermines Valley to discover the history of its mining industry and hear tales of the men, women and children who worked in the copper mining industry. The walk includes a visit to the Old Engine workings with the remains of a waterwheel used to raised ore from the mine and the Pudding Stone, the second largest glacial boulder in the Lake District.
The walk is on quarry roads and obvious paths throughout but does involve some ascents and descents on loose stones or grass which can be slippery in poor weather. You will be made aware of the dangers posed by old mine workings and the safe code of conduct in such areas, particularly regarding children and pets.
Grade 4 walks are generally full day walks that include hilly ground and require a reasonable level of fitness. You might encounter climbs up some steeper sections. The surfaces may be rough and uneven, with rocky or muddy sections, and you may also find yourself walking up irregular steps, over stiles or through narrow gates and gaps.
Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch.
Public transport: The 505 bus runs between Ambleside and Coniston via Hawkshead.
