Continuous chanting is a delicious practice. Join us for the start or for the whole morning and experience the heart of Pure Land Buddhism. Suitable for anyone including total beginners and accompanied children. Soup will be provided at 1pm - do let us know if you'd like to join us for this so we can make the right amount! [email protected].
We will do continuous nembutsu practice in our beautiful shrine room. This means we chant a simple 'Namo Amida Bu' chant as a group, with the freedom to harmonise as we go along if you want.
You are free to just listen for as long as you like before you join in, and you don't need to be good at singing. You can come and go during this session and we will hold silence outside the shrine room.
Please arrive between 10.15am and 10.30am when we begin. We'll continue until 1pm but you can leave whenever you want.
We suggest a donation of £5-15 or whatever you can afford more or less which will go into temple funds. We don't want anyone not to attend because of financial worries.
More about the continuous nembutsu practice:
The phrase 'Namo Amida Bu' (also called the nembutsu) is at the heart of Pure Land Buddhism. It is a way of reminding ourselves of our little fallible human selves (Namo) and taking refuge in Amida Buddha, the Buddha of infinite light and life, who accepts us 'just as we are'. It can also be seen as a calling out to something infinitely loving and 'ineffable', or as a way of expressing gratitude.
People have different experiences of joining in prolonged chanting in this way. You might have new thoughts or feelings as you chant, or get absorbed into the sounds or the words. You might feel a connection with the other people in the room, whether you know them or not. You might feel very ordinary and wonder about what you're going to have for dinner. You might feel uncomfortable feelings. It is often a very joyful experience.
