The Deering Estate ‘Contemporary Currents’ series is an annual program that integrates contemporary art with collections and historic houses. Artists are selected from the roster of past and current Artists-in-Residence at the Deering Estate to display their work on the second floor of the Richmond Cottage for a three to six-month period.
For the upcoming exhibition, the Deering Estate will feature new work by Gustavo Matamoros (Deering Estate Artist-in-Residence, 2024) in collaboration with Robert Thiele. The exhibition entitled Garden consists of standalone sculptures and sound integrated into the natural ambiance and furnishings of The Garden Room — a charming wooden alcove inside the Richmond Cottage at Deering Estate.
Garden will be on view from Sunday, April 28, through July 20, 2024. An opening reception for the artists will take place on Sunday, April 28, from 3 pm to 5 pm in the Garden Room at the Richmond Cottage.
About the Artists
GUSTAVO MATAMOROS is a renowned composer and sound artist recognized for his field recordings, composed improvisations, and acoustical activations of architectural environments, as well as for his leadership at the Subtropics Organization. Matamoros approaches sound as a living phenomenon, where every sound is an "Audible," expressing the natural occurrences and unique characteristics of its source. Within his work, the Audible serves as a fundamental unit of meaning in the morphology of natural noise, unveiling the essence of its origins. Through the use of amplification, his installations seek to reveal hidden aspects of reality, animating architecture to make audible its otherwise concealed acoustical signatures. He has been living and working in Miami since 1979 and most recently received the 2023 Community Partner of the Year Award from Deering Estate.
ROBERT THIELE is an influential visual artist as well as an educator and curator. Working with simple geometric and organic shapes and forms, Thiele developed a lifelong exploration of the art of containment and covering. His sculptural paintings variously contain, reveal and conceal, recede and project. These objects house apertures that frequently blur whatever is veiled behind them, whether with the size and shape of the opening, with obscuring fabric or acrylic. His nuanced work employs spatial play within the individual artwork and in groupings of artworks.
About the Deering Estate
The Deering Estate preserves the 1920s era Miami estate of Charles Deering, Chicago industrialist, early preservationist, environmentalist, art collector, philanthropist and first chairman of the International Harvester Company. The Deering Estate is a 21st Century house museum, cultural and ecological field station, and a national landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, owned by the State of Florida and managed by Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department. The Deering Estate offers complementary exhibition viewing nights, highlighting a variety of contemporary, historic, and visiting exhibitions inside the historic homes. Exhibition Evenings are free of charge and offer the public a chance to interact with artists and curators and to experience a variety of exhibit tours and talks.
